St. Martin De Porres National School in Aylesbury, Tallaght did not let the rain dampen their spirits as they celebrated the achievement of their second green flag for Energy on Wednesday 12th May.

The school invited the Mayor of South Dublin County Councillor Mick Duff to raise the flag he congratulated all at the school saying “All of your energy saving actions are so important in helping to protect the environment. It very important to care for our environment at school but it is just as important to continue at home by keeping your neighbourhoods clean and encouraging your parents and families to recycle and save energy”.

Awareness of energy conservation is on everyone’s mind at the school as the Green Schools Committee guided by Green Schools Coordinators Orla Stanford and Valerie Kavanagh placed signs on light switches as a reminder to switch off the lights, designated pupils as energy monitors to make sure that classes in each block save energy and displayed the schools “Pledge to be Earth Friendly” all around the school. In addition a number of lights were mended and cfl bulbs were installed. A new boiler was installed and they changed electricity provider. All these actions resulted in a 29% reduction in electricity use and a 30% saving on oil used to heat the school.

To date 60 schools in South Dublin County fly the Green Flag. Nationally over 3,100 primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland are currently taking part in the programme and 1,465 have been awarded the Green Flag.
