Deputy Mayor Paddy Cosgrave attending the ceremony praised the staff and pupils of Divine Word NS stating that he was really impressed to hear about all their water saving actions and activities such as:
- Placing basins in sinks and Hippo Bags in toilet cisterns
- Placing signs above taps saying turn me off?
- The newsletter sent to each family explaining the top tips for saving water
- Water Action Week which took place in March with lots of activities and experiments on water and water conservation
He added that ?Water is a precious resource. ?You may think that there is a lot of water available especially in Ireland where it?s always raining, but in fact only 1% of the world water is available to use and drink, the rest makes up our oceans and ice caps! It is also expensive to clean and treat water to make it suitable for us to use and drink. Therefore we should never waste it. As you may know from January next year all schools in the County will be charged for the water they use, but I am pleased to see that Divine Word National School is way ahead of other schools when it comes to saving water.?
Congratulations went to Niamh McGrane for coordinating the Green Schools Programme and to Principal John Williams for supporting the initiative. Deputy Mayor in closing the ceremony said ?I am in no doubt that this school is committed to flying the green flag for a long time to come and I congratulate you all?.
