PRESS RELEASE ISSUED 15TH JULY 2009

South Dublin Allotments Association

Allot Some Plot Time

South Dublin Allotment Association in co-operation with South Dublin County Council and An Taisce Green Communities are proud to announce their third Annual Open Day on Saturday 25th July, 2009, from 12 noon to 4.00 pm at Friarstown Allotment Site, Tallaght.

The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Mick Duff, will officially launch the Open Day at 12:30 pm. Activities will include tours of allotments, talks, information stands and a vegetable competition.

Many people in Dublin will be aware that there were many allotments sites situated throughout the city up to the late 1950s, but may be surprised to hear that allotments still exist in some areas and that a revival of interest in allotments has been steadily taking place in recent years.

In South Dublin County alone there are over 200 plots located at Mill Lane, Palmerstown; Corkagh Regional Park, Clondalkin; Friarstown, Bohernabreena/Tallaght and Tymon Regional Park, Tallaght. Friarstown is the largest allotment site in the County.

The Open Day is intended to be an opportunity for members of the public, gardening enthusiasts and allotment holders to see first-hand allotment gardening in action, talk with experienced growers and meet fellow allotment holders. The event is free and open to all visitors. Sensible footwear and weatherproof clothing is advised.
