South Dublin County Council is delighted to announce it is has become a strategic partner for iWish for 2018. iWish is an initiative to inspire, encourage and motivate young secondary school female students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths).
The iWish (inspiring women in STEM) conference in the RDS on the 29th and 30th of January, 2018 will consists of workshops, and daily keynote and engaging talks by women who are at the top of their field in STEM. The showcase event combines talks and interaction with female role models with interactive exhibition spaces where companies engage with the students directly with experiments and demonstrations of what they actually do.
In recent years, STEM Education has become an imperative and worthy initiative. The young secondary female students attending this event are at a pivotal point in their education. By becoming a strategic partner for iWish 2018 South Dublin County Council hope to make an important statement about the organisation’s role in supporting female students wishing to pursue a career in STEM subjects.
On agreeing to support the event, Daniel McLoughlin, Chief Executive of South Dublin County Council said “It is apparent to me that the event and overall initiative is of clear relevance and benefit to girls of secondary school age in our County and of course to the local economy supporting the development of future talent pipelines for local employers, especially in the STEM Sector. Further to this, the Council continues to support Engineers Week in the County, which this year runs from 26th February, to 2nd March, 2018”.
Prior to attending the event on the 30th of January, Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr. Paul Gogarty said “STEM can change our world. We have so many world problems to solve – food shortage, climate change, pollution, and girls can be part of that innovation and creativity – we just need to show them how subjects like Physics or Maths or Computer Science are the pathway to change the world. I’m delighted to see a number of schools from our County visiting the event this year, and look forward to seeing many more schools getting involved in the years to come.”
