300K- Have Your Say: Participatory Budgeting shortlisted projects announced.

Up to €300K has been made available by South Dublin County Council to residents from the Adamstown Lucan, Palmerstown areas for the first initiative of its kind in the country which engages the public in a participatory budgeting process.

During March 2017, the Council invited individuals and groups from the Lucan Electoral Area to submit their ideas through an online consultation portal and a series of public workshops in the area.

The Participatory Budgeting Steering Committee which is made up of Elected Members and Council Officials then reviewed and consolidated all the ideas into a comprehensive list in early April 2017. The review process involved identifying ineligible ideas and combining similar ideas which related to a specific location or overall theme.

Some of the reasons why a particular submission was not included on the shortlist are as follows:

• The project would cost in excess of €300K.

• Is covered by an existing Council Programme / Initiative / Grant

• Would require on- going operational costs

• Idea submitted provided by another service provider

  The recommendations were then brought for approval to the full membership of the Council at their meeting held on the 10th April 2017. 

  Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr. Guss O’ Connell speaking at the Council Meeting said “I wish to extend my thanks to everyone who submitted an idea about how to spend the additional €300k in the Lucan Electoral Area. We received 160 suggestions which demonstrates the strong interest our citizens have in been given the opportunity to have a say about how money is spent in their community. Mayor O’ Connell added, it’s now up to the public to decide which of these projects they would like to see being delivered in their local area.”

  Local residents now have the opportunity to vote for what ideas should receive funding up to the value of €300K in the Lucan Electoral area from the shortlist below:

1. Tree Sculpture, Waterstown Park, Palmerstown

2. Playground in Waterstown Park, Palmerstown

3. Youth Facilities Feasibility Study and Seed Capital

4. Allotments in Lucan

5. Men's Shed at Esker Cemetery, Lucan

6. New Pedestrian Bridge at Lucan Demesne - Feasibility Study

7. Improved access to Church and Graveyard at Mill Lane, Palmerstown

8. Feasibility Study for restoration of Silver Bridge, Palmerstown

9. Street Sculpture in Lucan Village Centre

10. Heritage Trail in Lucan

11. Volunteer Public Park Guides

12. Restoration of King John's Bridge Griffeen Park, Lucan

13. Christmas Lights in Lucan Village

14. Free Library Book Banks in public places

15. Study for Central Plaza /focal point in South Lucan

16. Multi-use Games Wall in Lucan

17. Fruit Tree Planting Programme

The next phase will involve a public vote which is scheduled to take place in May 2017. Voting will take place on- line at www.sdcc.ie/haveyoursayand at a number of locations in the Lucan Electoral Area. Details of voting dates will be available shortly on the council website www.sdcc.ie
