Health and Wellbeing Week
Closing Ceremony
Sunday 18th September 2016
Mayor Guss O’Connell officially closed a fantastic week of events on Sunday 18th September at 11.00 am in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin where South Dublin County Council hosted an activity-based Family Open Day.
Mayor O’ Connell speaking at the closing ceremony said “This week has proven to be a great opportunity to demonstrate the power of working in partnership with people to be leaders in looking after their own health”.
All the events were booked out in record time which gives us a great indicator of the interest that people have in their health and wellbeing. One of the highlights of the week was the Healthy Cooking open days in the Healthy Living Centre, Clondalkin.
Aromatherapy, angel meditation and reiki proved to be a popular choice with young mothers with laughter yoga, mindfulness and tai-chi the number one choice for the Active Retired. A number of people participated in the Floristry workshop in An Cosan, Tallaght with demonstrations given by a local horticulturist.
The Eco Therapy Walks in Massey Woods, Killakee were well attended and people learnt how nature can effectively guide us towards better health whilst increasing our resilience and helping us to reduce our stress levels.
The idea of Health and Wellbeing has become so important in Irish life today and this was reflected by the number of ambassadors that came forward to be part of the week and become champions for their own communities during Health and Wellbeing Week.
Leonie Hannon, Ambassador for the week stated:
It was a privilege to be nominated as an Ambassador for South Dublin County Council’s Health and Wellbeing Week 2016. It was such a positive experience and a great opportunity to honour my Donor who has given me the chance to celebrate and enjoy good health, especially having gone through a few very difficult years health-wise whilst waiting for my transplant.
Lee Moroney, Ambassador for the week stated:
It's a huge honour to be an Ambassador for the South Dublin County Council Health and Wellbeing Week. Coach approach has really only got going in promoting fitness and activity the last two years. By being an Ambassador it has helped raise our profile and reach out to people who are sitting on the couch pondering if they could jog 5 km.
South Dublin County Council will endeavour to embrace the guidelines of the Healthy Ireland Framework 2013-2025 which states ‘The impact of positive social interaction cannot be underestimated. Social Interaction and supporting social connectedness and involvement in community life are a keystone to empowering people at the individual level and building strong communities for health and wellbeing.’
