SPORTIVATE South Dublin Graduation

On July 14th Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Gus O’Connell, officially welcomed the participants, their families, coordinators, tutors and funders of SPORTIVATE South Dublin to County Hall on the occasion of the Graduation and Presentation of Certificates for the first ever SPORTIVATE South Dublin Programme.

SPORTIVATE is a partnership between South Dublin County Council and Dublin, Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board with support from the Department of Social Protection and Sport Ireland. SPORTIVATE offers young people, between the ages of 18 and 25 years of age, the opportunity of breaking into the sports industry in some capacity or furthering their educational opportunities.   The participants studied the many aspects and requirements of the sports industry and began a journey to develop the necessary practical skills.

The participants undertook a programme of education which included:

Sports and Recreation studies FETAC Level 4. This is a nationally recognised award and included Modules on:

 

  • Health related fitness                                     
  • Communications                                                     
  • Personal Effectiveness                                                      
  • Work Experience                                          
  • IT skills (Word processing)                                              
  • Soccer
  • GAA
  • Orienteering
  • Lifesaving

 

The skills learnt will be of value to the participants in helping to secure employment as Youth Leaders or Sports Coaches in the leisure industry and in a wider context to the community at large through the involvement of the participants in sport and social activities.

The sports, leisure and health industry is continually expanding and new positions are constantly arising and South Dublin County Council consider their involvement with SPORTIVATE and similar projects as being of particular relevance and value. 2015/2016 was the first year of the SPORTIVATE programme and applications are now being sought for the new programme beginning in September.

  • South Dublin County Council
  • The Board of Management of the Brookfield Community and Youth Centre

Mayor O’Connell especially commended the work done by the Coordinators of Sportivate, Bríd Corcoran and Máirín Uí Riain, who were responsible for guiding this new project through to a successful conclusion.  

 The Mayor,congratulating the Course participants on their tremendous efforts throughout the year said,

“I measure success by the progress of our people and particularly our young people. By the sight of communities prospering, and children thriving. And further education and training is central to this. It is a vital element in ensuring that everyone of working age - and especially young people – have the opportunity to improve their skills. And they can then use that opportunity to build better lives for themselves and their families. SPORTIVATE has given these participants that opportunity.”
