Celebrating Proclamation Day 2016
On Tuesday 15th March, the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Sarah Holland welcomed Councillors, T.D’s, representatives of An Garda Síochána, Pupils from St. Bernadettes JNS and members of the public to the Civic Offices, Clondalkin for a very special event to celebrate Proclamation Day.
The event commence with the singing of the National Anthem-Amhrán na bhFiann by the pupils from 2nd Class, St. Bernadettes National School. Garda representative Michelle O’Leary from Clondalkin Garda Station raised the National Flag while Mayor Holland placed a wreath in memory of the men and women who played a key role in the events of 1916.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Holland Said “A major focus on Proclamation Day is the unveiling and reading of each school’s own ‘Proclamation for a New Generation’. Using the 1916 Proclamation as a foundation, students were invited to write a new Proclamation for 2016 to reflect and re-interpret the Proclamation. The aim is that our young people will come up with new Proclamations which reflect their vision for a modern Ireland, which embraces people from many nations and cultures”
Mayor Holland also reflected that “During the Easter Rising, 40 innocent children died and called upon those in attendance to join in a minutes silence in memory of those children”.
Closing proceedings the Mayor thanked everyone involved in making Proclamation Day a hugely successful event and thanked the pupils for their wonderful singing on such a glorious and historic day.
