EUROPEAN WEEK AGAINST RACISM

Monday 14th March to Monday 21st March 2016

To mark European Week against Racism Week the Social Inclusion Unit hosted a competition to combat racism and celebrate cultural diversity of people living in Ireland today. March 21st is International Day for the Elimination of all forms of Racism. This day has been declared by the UN as a reaction to the murder of 70 anti-Apartheid demonstrators in Sharpville, South Africa in 1960.

The idea behind this competition was to ask children, young people and adults living here in South Dublin County to convey their own personal message against racism.

One of the main objectives of the Council is to facilitate initiatives to promote integration in the county. A willingness to learn about different cultures and to communicate with others is the key to a successful, fair and open society.

The winning slogan was designed by Ms. Julia McCall, St. Mac Dara’s Community College, Wellington Lane, Templeogue, Dublin 6w. A prize was presented to her by Mayor Sarah Holland on Tuesday 15th March in the school. The winning slogan has been circulated in sticker format to all primary schools, secondary schools and youth clubs in the county as part of our awareness campaign on racism.
