Launch of SPORTIVATE South Dublin educational programme for young people.

The Mayor of South Dublin, Cllr Sarah Holland, officially launched SPORTIVATE South Dublin in Brookfield Youth and Community Centre, Tallaght on Tuesday 23rd February at 1.00pm.

SPORTIVATE South Dublin is a joint initiative of South Dublin County Council and Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board with support from South Dublin Sports Partnership and The Department of Social Protection.

This programme caters for participants primarily between the ages of 18 and 25 who are interested in breaking into the sports industry in some capacity or furthering their educational opportunities. The participants will learn many aspects and requirements of the sports industry and will also develop the necessary practical skills to enable them to secure employment in the industry or enhance their prospects of going onto further education.

Mairin Ui Rian, SPORTIVATE co-ordinator said The programme represents a great opportunity for young people in South County Dublin area to get involved in a programme designed to broaden their education and help them into or get back into the workforce through sport”

The SPORTIVATE South Dublin programme is based around the level 4 QQI major award in Sport and Recreation which includes qualification in life saving and orienteering. Participants also receive several other certificates, for example, in Sailing, Child Protection Awareness, Disability Inclusion, Cricket, Athletics, Youth Work in the Community, Sports First Aid, Drugs Awareness and Manual Handling amongst others. Work experience in the community is also a key aspect of the programme.

The programme to date has been very successful with 16 participants taking part. Feedback from the participants is very positive. “I enjoy the fact that the course isn’t just writing that there is a lot of different physical activities involved and there is something new every day” (SPORTIVATE Participant)

The location and accessibility of the programme, including work experience, allows for young people to be actively learning in their own community.

SPORTIVATE South Dublin will commence a new programme in September 2016 based in Brookfield Youth & Community Centre. Further information can be sought by contacting the SPORTIVATE co-ordinator on 01 4528404 or emailing sportivatesd@ddletb.ie.
