Local History and Heritage Day in Clondalkin on 21st November
South Dublin County Council is proud to announce it will be hosting a local history and heritage day in Clondalkin Village on Saturday 21st November 2015, starting at 12.00pm at Civic Offices, 9th Lock Road, Clondalkin.
In anticipation of the development of the Clondalkin Round Tower Visitor Centre during 2016, we would like to gather as much historical information and materials of local interest as possible in advance, to maximise the impact of future exhibitions within the Interpretation Centre.
To this end, we invite visitors on the day to present any historic documents, oral histories and artefacts that they may have so we can scan, archive or record these items of historical importance to bring the history of the past to life for the visitors of the future.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mayor Sarah Holland said “The Round Tower Visitor Centre is truly an exciting opportunity for Clondalkin and our County and is a project offering benefits to both locals and potential future tourists alike. It will open up the Village and the Round Tower to those interested in our City’s history and heritage, in the case of the Round Tower a history stretching back over 1,000 years.
Failte Ireland’s re-positioning of Dublin as an attractive city destination emphasises the role that authenticity and variety play in differentiating an attraction. In this context unlocking the long authentic history of both the Round Tower and Clondalkin Village through the ages as told through the materials and stories of the people of the area, offers a rich opportunity to bring the stories of Dublin’s past to life in the future centre.I would strongly encourage people to attend this event to have an enjoyable morning on Saturday 21st November playing their part and learning about our past.”
Also that day, we will offer a number of historical walks through the village, a series of talks, including one from Turtle Bunbury, author and co-presenter of RTEs Genealogy Roadshow and “The Museum that comes to you” from Irish History Live. This will bring children a little closer to history with an interactive show and a talk from a local historian.
Finally, the event will include an information session informing the public of the plans and progress of the Round Tower Visitor Centre.
