Launch of South Dublin County Council’s Tree Policy – ‘Living with Trees’
Mayor Sarah Holland launched South Dublin County Council’s Tree Policy – ‘Living with Trees’ in Rathfarnham Castle on Tree Day, Thursday 8th October at 3pm. The Mayor and local children planted five Oak trees – Quercus robur - symbolising the 5 year span of the policy.
The Mayor said ‘Our Tree Policy ‘Living with Trees’ emphasises the importance of trees in our County. The 60,000 trees in South Dublin County make a big difference to our lives – from an environmental, social and health and wellbeing point of view. Trees create lovely surroundings in our streets, parks and public spaces. They provide a habitat for wildlife and act as Carbon sinks reducing the effect of Climate Change.’
Trees are a living asset that require ongoing maintenance, renewal and management for their long-term sustainability and community benefit. The adoption of South Dublin County Council’s Tree Management Policy ‘Living with Trees’ is an indication of the Council’s commitment to looking after one of its most important natural resources. The Policy is intended to act as a point of reference to enable informed discussion and to establish a clearer, consistent and more structured approach to the issues affecting trees.
The objectives of the Policy are
- Improve tree management and create a safer, healthier tree population
- Implement a proactive, planned programme of cyclical tree maintenance
- Maximise the use of the Council’s resources to provide a better service and give better value for money
This policy allows for a better understanding of tree issues and an overall improvement in the standard and continuity of tree care. In turn, this allows for a pro-active and systematic approach to tree management, resulting in a healthier tree population and creating a greener, more sustainable environment for residents and visitors to the County.
