Players, officials and spectators from across Ireland, the UK and Europe are expected to descend on South Dublin County on the 29th of August as the 1st AMA Ireland International Karate Championship takes place in the National Basketball Area in Tallaght. The event is the first international karate open tournament organised by WADO Martial Arts Ireland.
WADO Martial Arts Ireland were approved an offer of assistance from South Dublin County Council under the Community Tourism Diaspora Project for this year’s tournament. The project, run in association with Fáilte Ireland and IPB Insurance, is aimed at providing support to community based events that involve overseas visitors in order to carry through the legacy of The Gathering in 2013 and beyond. It is also aimed at fostering the growth of strong county Diaspora networks on the basis that Diaspora relationships are rooted in ‘people and place’.
“The grant has gone a huge way towards helping us put on a more professional event. Already we have loads of enquiries from teams looking to come and play next year”, said John Walsh of the Dublin Masters Basketball Association who were also approved an offer of assistance from South Dublin County Council under the scheme earlier this year.
While the 2015 process has closed, the Community Tourism Diaspora Project will re-open again in early 2016, and South Dublin County Council would encourage groups to start considering an application for 2016 for events that meet the criteria and attract overseas visitors back to Ireland. Keep and eye on our website www.sdcc.ie in the new year for more information.
