Final Ireland 2016 consultation takes place at Lucan Library
South Dublin County Council hosts final Ireland 2016 Commemorations Workshop at Lucan Library. Community and Voluntary groups from all over South Dublin gathered in Lucan library on Tuesday 28th July for the final workshop of the Ireland 2016 commemorations workshops.
The event was opened by Deputy Mayor Cllr. Guss O’Connell who welcomed Frances Fitzgerald,T.D., Minister for Justice and Equality, representatives from the Ireland 2016 Office at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaelteacht and over 60 participants from the community and voluntary sector. Cllr O’Connell said “I am delighted to say that South Dublin’s Commemorations Committee has carried out extensive consultations to ensure the development of a programme of events for 2016 that captures the ideas and contributions of people of all ages and from all areas in South Dublin County”
Ms. Lorna Maxwell, Director of Services, South Dublin County Council commented that “the attendance of so many people this evening is a testament to how the Centenary Programme has really captured the imagination of the citizens of South Dublin County. We want to develop a yearlong programme of events in which everyone is invited to participate”. A key strand of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme is that of Community Participation. It is vital that individuals and community groups across South Dublin County have an opportunity to make a contribution to our commemorative programme for next year. It is important that ideas and creativity are fostered across the spectrum of community life: from history and heritage, sporting organisations, arts and cultural groups, voluntary organisations and youth groups. The workshops were about engaging with citizens to allow all sections of the community to put forward their ideas, hopes and plans for 2016.
Ms Maxwell announced that the closing date for the Commemoration's Fund has been extended to the 31st August 2015. This fund is available for local groups/organisations to play their part by developing a project to mark the centenary. There is €40,000 available in funding for groups who wish to organise events for 2016. Applications are on our website www.sdcc.ie or contact communications@sdublincoco.ie
