Palmerstown Village Celebrates New Look
Monday 15th June saw the official opening of the Palmerstown Cycleway. Funded by the National Transport Authority, the cycleway extends from Chapelizod to the centre of Palmerstown Village. The works were welcomed by Cllr. Fintan Warfield, Mayor of South Dublin County Council who officially opened the project.
The cycleway involves public realm improvement works including limestone walls and an avenue of trees leading into the village centre. The environmental works were timed to coincide with and complement other environmental improvements carried out by South Dublin County Council in Palmerstown Village under the Villages Initiative Programme. This programme aims to bring life and vitality back to the centres of South Dublin’s nine traditional villages – Clondalkin, Lucan, Newcastle Rathcoole, Rathfarnham, Saggart, Tallaght, Templeogue as well as Palmerstown. The Villages Initiative intends to encourage and grow community involvement and partnership in developing new projects which will complement and build on existing Council urban improvement and maintenance programmes.
The initiative will focus on developing the villages as the focus of walking, cycling and amenity networks for their adjoining communities. New signage will point the way to interesting heritage walks for visitors and residents alike. Shop-front improvement grants and ongoing action against derelict sites will be complemented in village centres by improved footpaths, public spaces, tree-planting and new energy-saving public lighting. Attractive town centres will encourage footfall increasing vibrancy and vitality with better outcomes for hard-pressed businesses.
In Palmerstown work has been carried out to improve the urban setting of its attractive building stock. New pavements, trees and planters are carefully inserted to add to the villages atmosphere. A new plaza, trees and enhanced public lighting also improves the Manor Road shops nearby. The project has been supported by Palmerstown Tidy Towns group and welcomed by the “Pink Ladies,” a hard-working local volunteer group who meet weekly cleaning, planting and enhancing the heritage of this interesting village beside the Liffey.
Works of a similar nature will commence in the coming months in Rathcoole Village and nearby Newcastle.
