Inaugural Dublin Summer Bridge Congress takes place in South Dublin
Players, officials and spectators from across Ireland, the UK and Europe are expected to descend on South Dublin County this weekend for the 1st Dublin Summer Bridge Congress. The event will commence in Citywest Hotel on Friday 3rd July at 7.30pm with Mixed pairs, continuing on Saturday with Congress, Area Master, Intermediate and Novice Pairs. It’s the turn of the teams to compete on Sunday 5th July. The prize money for the weekend amounts to over €9,000.
Dublin Summer Bridge Congress were approved an offer of assistance from South Dublin County Council under the Community Tourism Diaspora Project for this year’s tournament. The project, run in association with Fáilte Ireland and IPB Insurance, is aimed at providing support to community based events that involve overseas visitors in order to carry through the legacy of The Gathering in 2013 and beyond. It is also aimed at fostering the growth of strong county Diaspora networks on the basis that Diaspora relationships are rooted in ‘people and place’.
While the 2015 process has closed, the Community Tourism Diaspora Project will re-open again in early 2016, and South Dublin County Council would encourage groups to start considering an application for 2016 for events that meet the criteria and attract overseas visitors back to Ireland. Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking game using a standard 52-card deck. It is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. Millions of people play bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home, making it one of the world's most popular card games.
