South Dublin County Council hosts Ireland 2016 Commemorations Workshop in Tallaght Stadium
Mayor Fintan Warfield opened discussions on plans to commemorate 1916 in Tallaght Stadium with community groups from all over South Dublin County on Tuesday 2nd June at Tallaght Stadium.
The Mayor also announced the winners and presented prizes to the young citizens of South Dublin County who were shortlisted for the Centenary Post Card Competition. This competition invited primary and post primary students throughout the county to share their ideas about how they would like to commemorate the events of 1916.
Cllr. Warfield, speaking at one of his final engagements as Mayor commented “The Ireland Centenary Programme places children and young people at the centre, with a wide range of imaginative activities for 2016. The outcome of this consultation with the children and young people of our county will be compiled in a report and presented to the members of South Dublin County Council’s Commemoration Committee. We hope to include many of these ideas in South Dublin County Council’s commemorative programme for 2016”
The winning entry submitted by Astrud Maguire from Griffeen Educate Together School, Lucan was a very simple but symbolic idea that can be replicated at different locations throughout the county in 2016. The event will involve children participating in a ceremony to remember and reflect on the memory of those children, one hundred years ago who died during the course of the Easter Rising.
Runner-up prizes were presented to Eoin Davis, St Mac Dara’s College, Templeogue and Shane Muldowney of St. Mary’s BNS, Ratfarnham.
Certificates of Commendations were also presented to Diarmaid Balfe, Saoirse Cray, Erin O’Sullivan, Megan Barry, Seán Walsh and Caitlín Christie.
Ms. Lorna Maxwell, Director of Services, South Dublin County Council commented that“the attendance of over 150 people this evening is a testament to how the Centenary Programme has really captured the imagination of the citizens of South Dublin County. We want to develop a year long programme of events in which everyone is invited to participate”.
A key strand of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme is that of Community Participation. It is vital that individuals and community groups across South Dublin County have an opportunity to make a contribution to our commemorative programme for next year. It is important that ideas and creativity are fostered across the spectrum of community life: from History and Heritage, sporting organisations, arts and cultural groups, voluntary organisations and youth groups. The workshops were about engaging with citizens to allow all sections of the community to put forward their ideas, hopes and plans for 2016.
Ms. Maxwell announced that there would be €40,000 available in funding for groups who wish to organise events for 2016. Applications will be available from Monday 8th June and further details on funding and applications will be available on our website www.sdcc.ie or contact communications@sdublincoco.ie
