The Mayor Fintan Warfield made a presentation to the three prize winners who took part in the ‘Stop Food Waste Recipe Competition’ ran by South Dublin County Council for schools, to support European Waste Reduction Week which runs from 22nd to 30th November 2014. This year the emphasis is on the amount of food waste generated.
The winning school, St Colmcilles Senior National School were presented with the overall prize of a wormery for the school to help convert food waste into fertilizer for the garden. The recipes ranged from Rebecca Rabbit Fish Cake (the winning entry), left over banana and fruit breads, omelettes, pizzas and a fantastic skin tonic made from orange peal.
It is estimated, that over 30% of all the food we buy ends up in the bin. This represents a cost of approximately €700.00 a year being thrown out by the average family.
