A Pride to Remember Photographic Exhibition

Mayor Fintan Warfield will officially open the photographic exhibition on Wednesday 19 November 2014 at 7.00 pm in County Library, Tallaght. The exhibition has been compiled by LGBTQ Pride giving an overview of the organisation and the famous Pride Festival. This will by followed by an illustrated talk on the history of Dublin LGBTQ by Archivist and Historian Toni Walsh.

Dublin LGBTQ Pride Ltd (Dublin Pride) is the Irish embodiment of a global human rights movement that originated with the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York. The foundations of the organisation can be traced back to the Irish Gay Rights Movement, established in 1974. The first full Gay Pride Week took place in 1980 and featured a picnic at Merrion Square. Volunteers then worked to organise the first ever Pride parade on 25 June 1983 which became a key aspect of the movement in Ireland and the festival we see today. Dublin Pride has developed from a protest march to a celebration of diversity and inclusion in modern Irish society. It is one of the largest Pride festivals in Europe with over 40,000 participating in the 2014 parade through Dublin City. Dublin Pride is the second largest festival in Ireland. The organisation also serves as a platform for the LGBT community, highlighting issues and celebrating diversity.
