Tymon Park Access Road and Cycle/Walk Way Official Opening 23rd October 2014

Mayor Fintan Warfield performs the official opening of the Tymon Park Access Road and Cycle/walk way on 23rd October 2014. This delivery of this project enhances the infrastructure of the County and delivers an access road and shared surface cycle /walk way to be proud of through Tymon Park to the National Basketball arena.

Tymon Park is a much used resource for the local communities and the surrounding hinterland, providing opportunities for a wide range of outdoor active and passive recreational activities for all age groups including walking, jogging and cycling all of which are now further enhanced by the completion of this project.

Tymon Park has a number of woodland trails which include the provision of way-markers and signs to guide the visitor along woodland trails with on-site interpretation of woodland features. This access road provides a great starting point to explore and enjoy all of the amenities the park has to offer.

In technical terms the construction of this scheme at a cost of €800,000 provides for multi-modal access catering for the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and all purpose vehicles. The works included significant road improvement measures for approximately 550 meters with a 6.5 m wide carriageway designed to the standards contained in the Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets. In addition it includes 700 m of shared, 4.0m wide pedestrian and cyclist shared surface which is identified as a strategic link within the Greater Dublin Area Cycle Plan. New and improved drainage measures have been provided which address flooding, water storage and improves surface water issues.

Part of the project was to provide new and improved public lighting which is to LED Standard and which greatly improves safety and visibility.

Bridge widening and improvement works over the River Poddle were also carried out.

Finally security and landscaping works, including safety fences, bollards, gates, new trees and hedging, an improved more attractive entrance arrangement, and the provision of ducting for CCTV links completes this necessary project.

The completion of this scheme finishes the first phase of works to link the greater Castletymon Area with Tymon Park and onwards over the M50 towards the proposed Wellington Lane Cycle improvement scheme.

This project delivers a high quality link through Tymon Park to the National Basketball Arena, the basketball arena which is also the headquarters of Basketball Ireland serves a national and international population and has a packed schedule of fixtures, competitions, leagues, national cups, schools cups and events for all ages for those who train and compete in the sport of basketball. The incorporation of a shared surface cycle and walk way serves a more local population and provides it with access options to both the park and the arena, the improved safety offered through the quality of design and construction as well as lighting are important for all those using the access road.
