Friarstown Allotment Site Extension Opened
The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Fintan Warfield, opened the extension to Friarstown Allotments at Bohernabreena, County Dublin on the 4th October 2014 in the presence of over 100 people.
The event was held to officially open the extension to the existing allotment site that has now eliminated a long standing waiting list for sites from prospective allotment holders. It was held as part of the South Dublin County Council Health and Wellbeing Week that was held from the 29th September to the 5th October. The Mayor commented that “allotments are part of the great food movements that have inspired people all over the world, from Michelle Obama to our own GIY (Grow it Yourself) organisation in Ireland and numerous Chefs including our own Donal Skehan and Richard Corrigan. This event is close to my heart as it fits in very neatly with the Health and Wellbeing Week being held in this county. Health and exercise are much in the news and allotments are part of this. They provide good food, fresh air and mental and physical health and provide great example to our young people.”
The extension was made possible by collaboration between South Dublin County Council, South Dublin Allotments Association and the European Union LEADER programme. As a result there are now over 300 allotment sites at Friarstown.
The site contains individual sites as well as a number of group sites that host Men’s Sheds and Cheeverstown House.
