Culture Night South Dublin County 2012
Friday 21st September

PRESS RELEASE

Culture Night is the big night in the year for communities all over Ireland to celebrate and enjoy culture in all its forms in all sorts of places. This year, for the first time, we celebrate Culture Night with a host of cultural events throughout South Dublin County. All events are free.

Visit the historic Pearse Museum, Rathfarnham, after hours where Pádraig Pearse lived and ran his school; tour the Berkley Costume and Toy Collection in the elegant rooms at Rathfarnham Castle; learn how to dance a set and experience live traditional music and song at Áras Chronáin, Clondalkin.

Have an evening that is Beyond Tantalising, at the Civic Theatre, Tallaght. Culture Night 2012 at the Civic Theatre offers audiences an opportunity to enjoy a flavour of the work of three companies in: The Wheelchair on my Face, written and performed by Sonya Kelly for Fishamble the new plays company; a sequence from Pageant a new show to be performed and toured by CoisCéim Dance in 2013; Music in Similar Motion by Philip Glass, celebrating the composer’s 75th birthday, performed by Kate Ellis of Crash Ensemble.

St. Maelruins’s Church, Tallaght, opens its doors to songwriters from eight European countries who will perform a concert that explores the Irish Folk Music tradition.

Contemporary arts centre Rua Red, Tallaght, invites you to an open studio evening with the Rua Red Community featuring a mix of visual artists, producers, designers and writers. Gallery 1 & 2 sees the commissioning of new work by artists Barbara Knezevic, Magnhild Opdøl and Seamus McCormack for the exhibition Plastic Art.

You can enjoy an open introductory workshop to Tallaght Youth Theatre at Rua Red.

Tallaght Youth Theatre is a fun, encouraging place where people aged 13-18 can experience and develop every aspect of the dramatic arts, whether performance, writing, directing or production.

Also at the arts centre Platform 1,a forum for writers and artists, will be reading poetry and prose at the arts centre, with an Open Mic available for anyone who wants to participate with Platform 1 on the evening.

All events are free but must be booked with individual venues. All programme details are available from participating venues, South Dublin Libraries or on www.culturenight.ie and http://arts.southdublin.ie
