St Mary’s National School in Greenhills celebrates their third Green Flag!

Pupils and staff at St Mary’s National School, Greenhills, Tallaght raised their third Green Flag for Water on Friday 22nd June 2012. To achieve the green flag award for water they set up the Green Police who carried out surprise Green Rules inspections. They also installed water saving buttons in most toilets, reducing their water consumption by 40%. They held an Action Day on World Water Day March 22nd where every class carried out water experiments. They installed a rain water harvesting system and produced a play Little Green Riding Hood which was very successful.
The schools dedicated Green Schools Committee is made up of teachers, the caretaker, parents and children and the programme is coordinated by teacher Naomi Moran. Deputy Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Mick Duff attended the flag raising ceremony and he congratulated the Principal Pat Egan, the Green Schools Coordinator Naomi Moran, teachers, parents, the caretaker Jose and of course the Green Schools committee for their hard work and dedication in protecting and improving their environment.
As well as conserving water the school is continuing to maintain the energy, litter and waste themes at the school by conserving energy, keeping their school grounds litter free and recycling and reducing waste. The school started the programme in 2006, they received their first green flag for litter and waste in June 2008 and their second flag for energy in May 2010.
