Mayor Caitríona Jones congratulates Arts Bursary Award Winners 2012

South Dublin County Council supports talented young artists of all disciplines from across the county through its annual bursary award scheme. The recipients of the Awards for 2012 have been announced. Fourteen awards were been made totalling €16,500 in the categories of music, literature, performing arts, animation and visual arts.

Mayor Caitríona Jones met with the award winners in County Hall to congratulate them on their achievements and she acknowledged the award winners valuable contribution to the artistic development to the County. Orla Scannell, Arts Officer, spoke about the history of the Bursary Awards which were established in 2000. Over ninety awards have been made to the arts community over the past twelve years which indicates the high standard and diversity of artistic practice in the county.

The meeting provided a wonderful opportunity for all of the Artists to meet the Mayor, and for the Artists to meet each other and exchange information about their ideas and projects.

There are four categories of awards and the winners for 2012 are as follows:

1. Individual Artist Bursary Awards, which enables career development through innovation, education, travel, and project development, have been awarded to:

Kevin Gaffney (Visual Arts €2000): To create a video work and publication “At first there was darkness and fluid inside my lungs”.
Louise Phillips (Literature €1000): For research writing and editing of “The Saving of Sobul” a fantasy novel for 8 – 10 year olds

Claire Hennessy (Literature, €1500): To develop and publish a collection of short stories

Fiona Reilly (Visual Arts, €1500): For a two month residency at NIDA Art Colony, Lithuania, to implement a specific project, addressing the roll of drawing and also begin to look at performance elements present within her work.

Daniel Figgis (Music, €2000): To develop new solo and ensemble works.
Rory White (Music, €750): To attend the Lake District International Summer Music Academy. Phoebe White (Music, €1250): To study violin in Indiana, USA from Sept to Dec 2012.

Andrew Moore (Animation, €500): To create a short film for submission to national and international film festivals.

2. The Annette Halpin Memorial Award for Young Musicians which is now in its third year has been made possible by the efforts of the Halpin Family working together with South Dublin County Council. The award is made to young musicians / composers / singers, in the county to support their musical development which might include master classes, purchase of instruments, recording, or travel. Two awards have been made:-

Jack McLoughlin (€500): To upgrade a tuba.
Just No Band (€1500): To make a professional recording and video.

3. The Project Award aims to support innovation in amateur, voluntary or community arts sectors. The 2012 Project Award Winner is:

Tallaght Young Theatre (€3000) towards a public sharing for Family and friends of a performance based on promoting positive mental health.

4. Young Artists Award is new this year and is designed to support the practice and / or career development of young artists aged 18 – 25. The 2012 Young Artists Award Winners are:-

Eric Kelly, Silversmith, (€600) towards equipment/materials.

Christopher Kelly, Writer (€150) towards a scriptwriting workshop at the Big Smoke.

Ibrahim Adedamole Balogun, Dancer (€250) towards a Dance Camp.
