The Mayor Caitriona Jones presented prizes to the winners of the South Dublin County Council Christmas Decoration competition. Over 50 entries were submitted and the standard was very high with imaginative decorations made from everyday items of waste such as tinfoil, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tin cans, milk cartons and plastic bags.

Mayor Jones said  “It is inspiring to see the creativity, imagination and resourcefulness of all the entries. It is important to move away from commercialism at this time of year and not waste existing resources. The young people who entered in this competition show great example and leadership in reuse and recycling. Our world is a better place because of their efforts. I wish all the entrants a very Happy and green Christmas”

The winning entries are:

  • Category under 10 years: Lucy O’Brien from Templeogue made Rudolf’s Head from a ball, paper cups, Christmas Bauble, news paper, twigs and a hair band.
  • Category 11 to 18 years:  Katie Boland from Bishop Galvin National School made a Snowflake from a magazine.
  • Category 18+: Annette Woolley from Tallaghtmade a Nutcracker soldier from newspaper, cellotape and a reusable presentation basket.

South Dublin County Council encourages all householders to recycle their festive packaging at bring banks around the County or in their recycle bins. Recycling information and Christmas Tree recycling details can be viewed at www.sdcc.ie .

Some tips for an environmentally friendly Christmas:

·         If you're not sure what to buy, why not buy gift vouchers and avoid wasteful production of unwanted goods at the same time.

·         Gift tags can be made from old greetings cards.

·         Pass any unwanted presents on to your local charity shop rather than throwing them away - there is sure to be someone who will like them!

·         Say no to unwanted bags! Always use a reusable shopping bag or reuse plastic bags. Don't accept bags that you don't need.

·         When shopping, avoid goods which involve unnecessary packaging or complicated mixed material packaging which can make recycling difficult.

·         Recycle used batteries

·         Avoid using paper plates, cups and serviettes if you are planning a party.

·         Buy Recycled! Buying products that have a recycled content is just as important as actually recycling

·         Choose decorations which can be reused, rather than flimsy ones which will be used once and thrown away.
