In Context 3: South Dublin County Council’s Per Cent for Art Programme
Announcing the installation of the Marker Tree by Andreas Kopp
South Dublin County Council is delighted to announce the Installation of the Marker Tree by Andreas Kopp, at the Kingswood Interchange on the N7. This new piece of public art, which was commissioned under its Per Cent for Art programme, In Context 3 is an imaginative and a distinctive gateway to the county, seen from close and far, by day and night, by drivers, visitors and residents. The Marker Tree is a highly visible landmark which combines ideas of rural and urban symbols which are key to the identity of the county.
The design of The Marker Tree combines the natural form of a tree with shapes and surfaces associated with industrial process and production. The sculpture has a steel trunk and branches, with brightly coloured steel ‘cushions’ in place of leaf clusters. The colours of the leaf ‘cushions’ are: red, yellow, pink, green and blue. The Marker Tree will change appearance from day to night, as the playful colours seen in daytime give way to soft lights scattered throughout the tree at night.
As a commonly shared signpost this sculpture will mark the daily journeys of commuters and residents, becoming a landmark with personal associations and memories for each person who passes. As artist Andreas Kopp says: “The Marker Tree will not just be a modern, smart looking piece of contemporary art, a landmark for South Dublin, but can be used by passers by as a place to project wishes, intentions or just to-do-lists. The sculpture can be seen in many different ways, as something natural or industrial, as a landmark or a lighthouse, playful or serious. It is open to interpretation for all who pass by.â€
The Kingswood Interchange connecting the N7 Naas Road and the Outer Ring Road provides transport connections to vital orbital corridors linking communities and businesses, promoting social and employment opportunities in the wider national community and the principal towns of Lucan, Clondalkin and Tallaght in South Dublin County.
The creation of new transport routes is an important element of the overall transportation strategy in the Greater Dublin area aimed at linking local centres of population and employment whilst relieving the pressure on the existing road network.
The Marker Tree was commissioned by South Dublin County Council through the In Context 3 Per Cent for Art Programme under funding arising from two capital construction road schemes - the Grange Castle Road and the N7 Naas Road improvement Scheme. This commission was awarded to German artist Andreas Kopp who has created an illuminated sculpture, entitled Marker Tree
