The Tallaght Young Filmmakers are hoping to build networks for young filmmakers by showcasing films made over the last year
On Thursday, November 2011 Tallaght Young Filmmakers are hosting a public screening of the films they have made over the past year at RUA RED, South Dublin Arts Centre. The event is entitled ‘This is TYF’. Through hosting the event, the group hopes to share their passion for filmmaking with their friends and family, showcase their potential to a wider film audience, and acknowledge the support they have received from community groups, organisations, funders and professional filmmakers over the years. In the past, they have worked with actor, composer and Director of award-winning film Accelerator (2001) Vinny Murphy and actor Hugh O’Conor, among many other incredible filmmakers and producers.
Director Vinny Murphy has said about working with the group,
“Tallaght Young Filmmakers were definitely by far the best group of young people I’ve ever worked with in terms of filmmaking.â€
Among the films being shown include Arcane, a thriller that takes place in the Hell Fire Club; Roasted and Dragons’ Death, which represent two different comedic takes on the television show Dragon’s Den; and a documentary that explains the working method and experiences of the group.
Tallaght Young Filmmakers are a youth-led filmmaking group for ages 14 to 19. The ideas, responsibility and output of what is created by the group is driven and led by the members, including interviewing and selecting the professional filmmakers with whom they work. Begun in 2008 through support of the Arts Council’s Young Ensembles Scheme Fund, TYF is an initiative of young people from the County in partnership with South Dublin County Council’s Arts Office. The group meets weekly in RUA RED. Since they began in 2008 they have completed 13 short films and won 2 awards. The group develops their own film projects and receives mentoring and master classes from professional filmmakers in film critique, scriptwriting, sound, acting, directing, editing and more.
TYF developed from the initiation of students who had worked with South Dublin County Council’s Film and Visual Arts Coordinator in secondary schools in the area of West Tallaght. Students approached South Dublin County Council to seek support in establishing an after-school filmmaking group. The Arts Office assisted the young people in applying for funding from the Arts Council’s Young Ensembles Scheme. In 2008, with funding awarded the Tallaght Young Filmmakers began. There are now 18 members. The programme is a partnership between the young members and South Dublin County Council’s Arts Office and is supported by RUA RED, South Dublin Arts Center and the Arts Council.
Victoria Durrer, Youth Arts Co-ordinator for South Dublin County Council has said about the upcoming screening,
"The idea to host a public screening came from members of the Tallaght Young Filmmakers themselves. It’s an incredible opportunity to highlight the creativity, imagination, enthusiasm and dedication these young people have in pursuing a future in filmmaking. I hope the event also fosters an opportunity for other young people interested in film to network with peers and professionals."
