Tallaght wins bid to become new Sustainable Energy Community
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has named Tallaght as one of three new Sustainable Energy Communities (SEC) in Ireland. The Tallaght SEC was selected for having a forward thinking, co-ordinated approach to energy savings and integrating sustainable energy into community planning and development.
The Sustainable Energy Communities Programme aims to develop a series of Irish communities as ‘living laboratories’ to establish a culture of innovation and facilitate the emergence of new sustainable energy technologies and practices that grow energy smart towns and cities.SECs involve everyone in the community, across all sectors, working together to enhance sustainability by being as energy efficient as possible, using renewable energy where feasible and developing indigenous energy supplies.
The Tallaght SEC Team is led by South Dublin County Council and members of the Steering Group include representatives from South Dublin Chamber of Commerce, Tallaght Institute of Technology, The Square Shopping Centre, Respond Housing Association, HSE, Tallaght Leisure Centre and Circle Housing Association.
“South Dublin’s leadership in addressing the energy challenge is represented by its vision of Save, Share & Renew. This broad flexible approach will nurture innovation and encourage action at every level of the community, influencing sustainable energy dialogue†stated Joe Horan, County Manager
Action Groups are being set up to co-ordinate and implement a range of projects and initiatives across all sectors (including residential and business pilot projects), with the main aim of increasing energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and saving energy costs.
Mayor Catriona Jones welcomed the announcement “The Tallaght SEC provides an opportunity for local businesses and homeowners to become more energy efficient and reduce their energy costs. This will improve business competitiveness and job creation in South Dublin. I also look forward to working with the young people in our schools to expand on the very successful ‘Green Flags’ initiative. This project will provide a valuable foundation for the countywide Sustainable Energy Action Plan which is currently being developedâ€.
