Hurlers and Hugglewugs, Authors and Artists, Poets and Performers all add up to a wonderful programme of events in South Dublin County to mark Children’s Book Festival 2011.
Children’s Book Festival is an annual national celebration of all that is good about children’s books. South Dublin County Libraries have consistently produced a high quality programme of events for the festival. This year we are offering a programme of Irish and international authors and illustrators designed to whet the appetite of young readers from toddlers to teens. Activities will be running in all our libraries throughout the month with everything from readings by popular authors, to writing and illustration workshops, plus storytelling, quizzes and competitions.
The festival commences on Wednesday 5th of October at an exciting launch event. Don your county colours and hurl yourself down to the County Library Tallaght to meet our launch guests from the Dublin hurling team. The festival will be launched by Mayor Caitriona Jones at 6pm and this will be followed by a question and answer session with our hurling heroes.
From there on in it’s fun and games, words and numbers all the way with some very exciting and entertaining events.
Old favourites like Niamh Sharkey, Sarah Webb and Bob Burke and many more are joined by some first-time visitors to South Dublin Libraries. We are thrilled to welcome Judi Curtin, Adrienne Kennaway and Chris Judge and are looking forward to their appearance throughout the festival.
2011 also sees some very well known and hugely popular international authors joining us for Children’s Book Festival. We welcome in particular Darren Shan author of the Tunnels of Blood and Demonata series of books. Teen author Melvin Burgess joins us in Clondalkin Library on 18th for an interesting session around his latest title Kill all Enemies.
We are delighted this year to mark Maths Week, which falls in the middle of Children’s Book Festival, and we have some very exciting maths based activities lined up; and this is maths like you’ve never seen it. Little Bigtop Theatre Company will present their Soctastic Math-o-matix show in the County Library, Tallaght on 18th and in Clondalkin Library on the 19th October. Young children are invited into a sumptuous environment full of colour shapes and fun! A mischievous Peg-a-saurs, an urgent shape hunt and a bubbly finale all add up to make this the most engaging maths lesson ever for our young members. We’ll also be joined by Bunnyhop, a loveable rabbit in a magic hat full of stories of numbers and puzzles.
Festival competitions are open to everyone. There is a colouring competition for Under 6’s and a Limerick competition with three different age categories beginning at 5 years old. Great prizes to be won, sponsored by Leisureplex Tallaght
So… beat the recession, admission is free to all events, and prepare to be entertained! (You may need to book for some of these events)
