PRESS RELEASE: 4th July 2011
The Grand Canal Green Route Extension to Adamstown and Griffeen Avenue, Lucan was officially opened on Friday, 1st July, 2011 at 12.30 p.m. by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald, T.D., in the presence of Cllr Guss O’Connell Lucan Area Chair, Deputising for Mayor of South Dublin County Council.
The Grand Canal Green Route Extension provides approximately 2km of cycle/pedestrian tracks, public lighting and CCTV, and a new canal bridge. This cycle/pedestrian route is an extension of the existing Green Route that runs between Davitt Road, Inchicore and 12th Lock, Lucan. The new route enhances the accessibility of the Grand Canal from surrounding areas and creates a first class pedestrian and cycle route between Adamstown, Lucan South and Dublin City, that facilitates a secure, safe and attractive connection for commuting and leisure purposes.
The new overbridge, which is a focal point of this project, was designed and constructed to the highest standard so as to reflect both the ecologically sensitivities of the location and the historical engineering associations of the canal. The bridge is a striking red colour and gradually rises from the Canal bank above the Canal itself, moving through the adjoining trees on both sides and is an elongated ‘Z’ shape in plan form. The bridge has been designed to ensure that the requirements of Waterways Ireland, in relation to navigating inland waterways, are met.
The cycle/pedestrian route through Griffeen Valley Park promotes additional activity in South Dublin County Council parks and also improves access for a large residential population area in Lucan South to an important ecological corridor along the Grand Canal. The high standard of the route design and the landmark qualities of the overbridge means that the project creates and enhances conditions favourable to the promotion of sustainable travel modes. The quality of life of the general public will be enhanced and improved, socially, economically and environmentally. As a result of this project real and measurable changes in people’s travel choices and behaviour can be achieved.
This project, delivered by South Dublin County Council, with the support of the Department of Transport’s Smarter Travel Programme, provides significant access to a fantastic local recreational facility and will improve public health, enhance access to the outdoors and will re-engage people with cycling and walking.
Cllr. Guss O’ Connell speaking at the launch said ‘The construction of this cycle and pedestrian network to Adamstown & Griffeen Avenue and Grand Canal overbridge, brings sustainable travel to the heart of the planning process and embeds transport policies into communities. Local government is an essential player in delivering actions at a local level which is a key to success’.
