Pippa O’Connor has launched the 2011 ‘4 Districts Charity Walk” which will take place in Rathcoole on Saturday 25th June, between 10am and 6pm. The event is held in Rathcoole Park in the South Dublin County Council Public Park, opposite Avoca .

This is the third year of the event which raises funds for the Irish Cancer Society whilst attempting to set a new Guinness World Record!!! To date the Charity Walk has raised €30K for the Irish Cancer Society and set a new Guinness Book of Records, World Record, for “The World’s Largest Charity Walk”.

In 2009 the 4 Parishes of Rathcoole, Saggart, Newcastle and Brittas combined to establish a new Guinness World Record when 1,903 walked their way into the Guinness Book of Records. Since then our 4 little villages have inspired people all over the World from South Africa to Texas to break ‘our’ record whilst raising much needed funds for Charity. Most recently the record was broken by the people of San Antonio Texas, when a massive 5,441 people were involved in establishing a new World Record.

On Saturday 25th June the people of the ‘4 Districts’ will attempt to regain the World Record and we need your help. We need 6,000 people to come out and walk a Mile for Charity anytime between 10am, and 6pm. Our aim is to regain the World Record and raise €60K for the Irish Cancer Society!!!

The Event involves anyone of any age walking just 1 mile for charity, anytime that suits them between 10am and 6pm. Adults pay €10 per ticket to walk a mile and all children (under 12) are free. Tickets can be purchased on the day or in advance from Paddy Byrnes Newsagent, the Mall, Main St. Rathcoole.

Last year we had some fantastic attractions and this year we have expanded the event still further. You will be able to enjoy the FM104 RoadHog, Water Zorbs, Kayaking, Water Zorbs, Archery, Shooting, Bouncy Castles and Go Karting. All childrens activities (under 12) are free when Mom or Dad walks a mile for charity. This year’s new attractions include music by the fantastic Artane Boys Senior band, a mouth watering range of hot food courtesy of Sean McArdle at Irish Farmers Markets, a Craft Market courtesy of Lesley at Gift Incentives and some fantastic vintage vehicles ranging from Fire Engines to Jeeps. So come on down and enjoy the fun.

This year we will be hosting a ‘Mini Olympics’ the night before the Walk, to promote athletics for all the family, in conjunction with Donore Harriers Athletics Club. There will be boys and girls sprint races and field events from age U8 to U18 and entry is free. Races start from 6.30pm in Rathcoole Park. For Mom and Dad we are hosting a Charity 5K Fun Run / Walk in the Park at 8pm. This will all take place on the eve of the Charity Walk, on Friday 24th June.  Entry Fee for the 5K is €5, with all proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society, and entry can be made on the night.
