National ‘BioBlitz’ Event to be held in Waterstown Park

How many species of plants, animals, birds, insects, slugs and snails would you think live in an urban park?  Between 5pm on May 20th to 5pm on May 21st, South Dublin County will get an opportunity to discover the answer to this question for one of its parks, Waterstown Park, Palmerston.

BioBlitz is a scientific race against time.  The aim of this fun event is to find as many species as possible within Waterstown Park over a 24 hour period.  This involves pulling together a large team of people with both specialist knowledge and casual interest in plants and wildlife.  A full range of volunteer recorders and fun events has been organised including an evening bat walk after sundown on Friday 20th, a dawn chorus on Saturday morning, and a range of other activities such as moth trapping, mammal tracking, butterfly and bumblebee walks, plant identification, pond-dipping, and bug hunts.

Waterstown Park is one of 5 parks throughout the country that are participating in this fun, competitive event but is in unique in being both the smallest site and being an urban-located park.  The full range of events is listed on the BioBlitz website (http://bioblitz.biodiversityireland.ie), just click on the photo for Waterstown Park for full details of times.  The event is co-hosted between South Dublin County Council and the National Biodiversity Data Centre.
