PRESS RELEASE: HOUSEHOLDERS TO RECEIVE BROWN BINS FOR FOOD AND GARDEN WASTE
Monday 21st June 2010: South Dublin County Council is providing householders with a Brown Bin service for food and garden waste in order to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Brown Bins will be delivered to 75,000 households throughout South Dublin County over the coming weeks for food waste including cooked and raw meat and fish, rice, pasta, teabags, bread and cooked / raw fruit and vegetables, and for garden waste such as grass, weeds and hedge clippings.
Along with the Brown Bin, there will be an Information Pack for householders, detailing how to use the Bin and what to put into it, as well as a sticker for householders to put onto their Brown Bin to check against before putting waste into the Brown Bin, and a calendar detailing both Brown and Black bin Collection Days. Collection of the Brown Bin (140 Litre) will cost half (50%) the price of the large (240 litre) Black Bin and householders with a waiver will be automatically credited with a number of bin lifts quarterly, allocated between the Black and Brown Bins. It’s all part of the Council’s commitment to meeting Ireland’s targets set down by the EU to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste going to landfill by 65%.
“South Dublin County is winning the race against waste when it comes to filling our Green Bins with packaging waste and bringing glass, batteries, electrical goods and other materials to the civic amenity centres and now the Brown Bins provide another opportunity to further reduce the amount of waste from South Dublin County going to landfill,” says John Quinlivan, Senior Executive Officer , South Dublin County Council.
“Bin Day will still be the same for all householders; when the Brown Bin collection starts the Black Bin collection will move to every two weeks and the Brown Bin will be collected on the other week because at least a quarter of the waste currently put into the Black bin can now go in the Brown bin. An information pack containing a calendar is being delivered to all householders with their Brown Bin, clearly detailing the collection details for both Black and Brown bins and we urge householders to check the calendar and ensure they put the right bins out each time to ensure collection,” says John Quinlivan.”
“The Council recognises that people may have questions about the Brown Bin service and so we have established a lo-call information line 1890-253149, operated from 9am to 5pm, Monday - Friday to answer questions from householders about their Brown Bin,” says John Quinlivan. “We have also put in place an email query service, brownbins@sdublincoco.ie , and information on the Council’s website, at www.sdcc.ie .
Important information for householders about using the Brown Bin:-
- When your Brown Bin collection starts the Black Bin collection will move to every two weeks – a calendar is included in the Information Pack you will have received in your letterbox when your Brown Bin was delivered.
- Collection of the Brown Bin (140 Litre) will cost half (50%) the price of the large (240 litre) Black Bin.
- Householders with a waiver will be automatically credited with a number of bin lifts quarterly, allocated between the Black and Brown Bins.
- For hygiene reasons, we strongly encourage householders to put the Brown Bin out for collection every two weeks, i.e. every time the collection takes place.
- Please wrap food waste in newspaper and do not put plastic bags / packaging into the Brown Bin.
“We encourage householders to be just as hygiene conscious with the Brown Bin as they are with their Black Bin and so we advise them to wrap food waste in newspaper before placing in the bin and we strongly encourage people to put the Brown Bin out for collection every two weeks,” says John Quinlivan.
