Scoil Mhuire in Clondalkin celebrated the raising of their second green flag for Travel on Friday 30th April 2010.  The flag was raised by Mayor of South Dublin County Councillor Mick Duff.

He congratulated the staff and pupils for their hard work and dedication in protecting and improving their environment saying “People passing by this school are very impressed to see all your green flags flying and this sends a strong message that the pupils and staff at this school really do care about the environment. The flags are symbols of all your hard work to make your school a cleaner and greener place. We all know how important it is to care for our environment but it is easy to talk about it and not take action. Your actions here at Scoil Mhuire are improving and enhancing the environment – actions like walking or cycling to school, recycling waste, keeping your school litter free and saving water and energy. It can’t have been easy to keep it all going but today you can all be proud of the hard work”

60 schools in South Dublin County now fly the Green Flag. Recent research by An Taisce on the economic value of the Green-Schools programme to schools in Ireland has revealed that the programme has saved schools in Ireland a minimum €2 million in waste, electricity, water and fuel costs this year. The results reveal a minimum of 12 tonnes of waste diverted from landfills in Ireland every school day by schools undertaking the programme. Because the programme also involves the wider community the overall savings to the wider community could be several times the €2 million saved by the schools involved.

Over 3,100 primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland are currently taking part in the programme and 1,465 have been awarded the Green Flag.
