Eco Week 2010

South Dublin County Council is proud to announce its sixth annual Eco Week which runs from the 19th -24th April 2010 and will be launched by the Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Mick Duff on Monday 19th April.

The week long festival of free events will deliver an important message, that everyone can play a role in reducing their impact on the environment in an engaging, enjoyable and practical way.

Workshops, exhibitions, drama and stories are scheduled to take place all around the County in libraries, parks, schools and also at Ballymount Civic Amenity, The Big Picture and Council Offices. Events will inform the people of South Dublin County on current environmental topics such as water conservation, waste management, composting, biodiversity and climate change. There is something for everyone from Community Groups to Schools, Householders to Individuals and this year Businesses in the County can get involved, South Dublin County Council will present at South Dublin County Chamber B2B network meetings.

Highlights of the week include the Water Conservation Roadshow, A Walk on the Wild Side Biodiversity Walks in local parks, Dale Treadwell will introduce children to the wonders of the natural world with his Naturally wild Workshop, Clondalkin Community Recycling Initiative (CCRI) will host a fascinating talk on the afterlife of common household appliances and demonstrate how old washing machine drums can be reused as planter boxes.  Ballymount Civic Amenity will host tours and a compost bin sale.

Sorcha O’Brien, South Dublin County Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer saidThis year Eco-Week will have a special emphasis on Water Conservation. We have developed a Water Roadshow that will be in shopping centres around the County during Eco-Week. It will provide information on where our water comes from, how much water every person uses each day (148 Litres on average) and simple ways we can conserve our precious water resources. Following Eco-Week the Water Conservation Road show will be available on loan to groups who would like to promote water conservation awareness. Even though we have a lot of rain in Ireland that does not mean that we have an infinite amount of clean useable water. It is a very precious resource that should not be wasted or taken for granted therefore South Dublin County Council is encouraging everyone to reduce their water usage by 10% to help conserve water. You can visit our roadshow or www.taptips.ie” to get some very simple hints on how to do this.”

The launch will also coincide with the announcement of the winners of this year’s Environmental schools competition. All the Schools in the County were invited to design an anti-litter poster and slogan. We received over 1000 entries for the Environmental schools competition from schools across the County this year. The winning posters will be professionally printed and distributed around the county to help raise awareness around the issue of litter and what everyone can do to help prevent it.
