South Dublin County Council, in collaboration with The Institute of Technology Tallaght

and Engineers Ireland presents: Engineers Week: 8th – 13h February 2010

Mayor Mick Duff, South Dublin County Council and the Director of The Science Gallery at TCD, Dr. Michael John Gorman will officially launch Engineers Week: 8th – 13h February 2010 www.engineersweek.ie on Monday 8th February in the award winning RUA RED South Dublin County Arts Centre, Chamber Square, Tallaght at 10 a.m.

Engineers Week is a nationwide event coordinated by Engineers Ireland as part of their STEPS to Engineering program. The aim of the Week is to positively promote engineering as a career and to create an awareness of the wonderful, life-enhancing and exciting challenges that engineers are involved in and responsible for.

It is a week of fun-packed activities for both primary and secondary students where they will have an opportunity to talk to professional engineers from SDCC and academic staff from ITT about what engineers do and what an important part they will play in revitalizing our economy.

Over 1400 students from the County have been invited to take part in various events and workshops throughout the week which include:

Primary Students 3rd – 6th Class

Interactive Quiz at The Big Picture

The students take part in both a challenging and fun quiz with an engineering twist using the main interactive features of this fantastic facility. It also teaches the students about Tallaght and our vision for its future.

K’Nex Challenge

This involves learning how real engineers work by designing and building their own Rockets using K’Nex.

The Electric Magnetic Engineering Show

This show has been given by Engineers Ireland with great success nationally. It caters for audiences of 140 students and will be hosted by ITT for three shows on Friday 12th March. They join Scientific Sue on this forceful Journey of Discovery. The show promises the following:

What are positive and negative charges? Volunteers will be required to help demonstrate how these forces can be used to separate pepper from a salt and pepper mix, to push corn starch lemmings out of a tin boat and make Chloe’s hair stand up on end. Can Magnets also be used to give push and pull forces? What crazy things will our resident scientist come up with to demonstrate their magic properties? Be amazed at how engineers use these forces in the world around you! Loads of energy changes and cool experiments to demonstrate how forces affect speed, shape and direction.

Electronic SNAP Workshop

Ever wondered how over a quarter of a million lights in Ireland stay lit all night? Or simply what

exactly happens when you plug your computer into the socket on your wall? Well this workshop will provide the students with the answers and help them learn how electricity and electronics are used in the everyday world.

Secondary Students: Transition Year

Traffic Management Scratch Workshop.

A lot of stringent planning goes into the management of Traffic. This workshop will bring this process to the students by demonstrating how we model and manage traffic using Scratch software. A visit after the session to our Traffic Management Centre to see how it’s done in real life may prove the highlight of the event
