The Council fully endorses the recent warnings issued by Irish Water Safety and An Garda Sioch?na in relation to the extreme danger to persons entering onto frozen bodies of water such as lakes, ponds and canals.
In many cases the water level below the ice has fallen and there is a real risk to life where a person may fall through the unsupported ice into freezing water below.
In particular, parents are requested to be vigilant as to the whereabouts of their children and to advise them of the dangers.
The Council is in the process of breaking ice at the edge of lakes and ponds in public parks throughout the county to discourage access.?
The best advice is to stay off the ice.
