Celebrating the Reader
South Dublin County Council Libraries & Arts
November 14th 2009 – 9.30am – 4pm The Maldron Hotel, Tallaght
South Dublin County Libraries in association with South Dublin County Arts Office will hold its 8th annual ‘Readers’ Day’ on Saturday November 14th 2009
This year’s line-up promises to be yet another great day. Speakers include esteemed authors and poets Kevin Power, Chris Binchy, John Curran, Judith Mok, Paula Meehan, Paul Howard, Diarmaid Ferriter and Paul Durcan.
The concept of Readers Day arose from the relatively recent resurgence of Reading Groups and Book Clubs. South Dublin County libraries have been unique in setting up reading groups in each of its branches which have proved very popular. The aim of Readers Day is to promote and celebrate the reader who is often seen as something abstract in the literary world.
Dermot Bolger, 2008 Writer in Residence at Farmleigh and a resident artist in the In Context 3 (South Dublin County Council’s Percent for Art Scheme) has once again facilitated the event and will act as MC for the day.
This event will provide a vital link between authors and those who read their books and will provide confirmation that their work has meaning for people they don’t actually know.
The core audience initially was made up of members of the book clubs held at the six branches of our library network as well as members of the public, and now in it’s 8th year, we are drawing an audience from all over Leinster!. The event will be launched by Mayor Mick Duff of South Dublin County Council at 10am.
Eminent author Dermot Bolger will be available for interview by contacting Patricia Fitzgerald or Caroline Higgins at Library Development Office at 01-4597834 or email libdevoff@sdublincoco.ie
