Social Inclusion Awareness Week
Monday 9th November to 13th November 2009
Mayor Mick Duff in the presence of Mr. John Curran T.D., Minister of State with special responsibility for Drugs Strategy and Community Affairs at the Department of Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs will officially launch South Dublin County Council Social Inclusion Awareness Week on Monday 9th November 2009 at 12.00 pm in County Hall, Tallaght. South Dublin County Council is working to minimise disadvantage and improve the quality of life for all residents in the County.
The aim of this week is to highlight the positive work carried out by South Dublin County Council and other agencies to reduce social exclusion and poverty, and to promote an understanding of social inclusion and diversity in the County.
Social Inclusion is the process which ensures that those at risk of poverty and social exclusion gain the opportunities and resources necessary to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live. (Joint Report by the Commission and the Council on Social Inclusion, Office for Official Publications of the European Union). South Dublin County Council plays a key role in the direct delivery of social inclusion actions, programmes and supports to the communities.
Social Inclusion Awareness Week 2009 will have a particular focus on Creativity and Innovation. Here in South Dublin we have a strong tradition of being innovative and creative.? Throughout Social Inclusion Week, we are promoting innovative projects to encourage E-Inclusion and promote social inclusion.? We want to expand access to and the use of Information Technology for promoting social inclusion.
During the week there will be a varied programme of events, including a Tea Dance for older people in the Red Cow Inn Clondalkin, Art Classes for People with Disabilities in the County Library in Tallaght, Community Caf? in Rua Red South Dublin Arts Centre, Launch of Audio Books in the County Library, E-Inclusion for Older People in the Big Picture, Tallaght, Inclusive Book Reading with Irish Deaf Kids, Open Day St. Basil?s Traveller, Training and Education Centre and much more.
